Early on, we made a decision to build our furniture out of solid wood. We loved the beauty of wood – its grain, its texture and its natural esthetic quality. At first, we made all of our furniture out of solid Pine. As a softwood, it was affordable, durable and carried a stain well. As we developed our furniture line, we began exploring and introducing other woods – rubberwood, mango wood, sheesham and acacia wood.
Acacia wood has been used in furniture since biblical times. It is believed that acacia wood was used to construct the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle and Noah’s Ark as it was considered virtually indestructible. In Egyptian mythology it is considered the tree of life. In Tibet or China, acacia is used as incense to keep the positive energies floating.
The acacia tree is commonly known as “wattle, “whistling thorn” and “thorn tree”. It is considered a hardwood, but like poplar it is very fast growing. As a result, it is considered a sustainable wood. It is believed that acacia has been around for more than 20 million years through fossil documentation.
We first discovered acacia in furniture when we were working on some outdoor collections. While visiting one of our factories, we saw a few patio sets whose wood looked like walnut. We were told that this wood was acacia stained in walnut color. Naturally, acacia has beautiful rich and varied grain that can be stained distinctively in a variety of colors. As we started using acacia in our furniture, we realized the individuality, magnificence and strength of this wood.
Our first acacia collection was the Monroe Collection. This collection is made from solid acacia wood in a distressed wire brushed charcoal brown finish. It is a collection that fits in most eclectic contemporary settings. In this collection, our Head Designer, Pauline Ring, used the richness of the acacia wood to complement her design ethos and enhance the overall look of the collection. She used the varied colors of acacia wood, coupled with the charcoal brown finish, the wire brushed distressed finish and the antique brass hardware to create this sublime collection that definitively delineates a living space.
